WHY GO

Historic railway workshops beside the Cromford Canal, with waterside walks, picnic space and a visitor centre. Workshop access remains restricted.

High Peak Junction preserves the interchange between the Cromford and High Peak Railway and the Cromford Canal. Its gritstone and brick workshops were built and enlarged between about 1830 and 1865, initially maintaining inclined-plane equipment and horse-drawn wagons, then steam locomotives. The surviving buildings tell the story of goods moving between railway and canal.

Before you set out

Details and coordinates can be incomplete or out of date. Check current access, conditions, weather and your route with the site operator before travelling. This is not live navigation or emergency guidance.
Plan a safe visit
Editorial review: 5 November 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
Follow signs from Cromford to the Lea Road car park. Take the signed gravel path and access bridges towards the canal and workshops. There is no direct vehicle access to the workshops from the A6.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
Not yet checked. Please confirm before your visit.
Terrain & steps
Gravel approach, bridges and gradients; flat compacted-grit canal towpath. Workshop floors are uneven wood and stone. The adjoining High Peak Trail has steep inclines.
Accessibility
Blue Badge parking and an accessible toilet are provided. The approach has a steepish incline, and there is no nearby drop-off point. Narrow doorways and uneven floors complicate workshop access. Ask about individual requirements and advance Tramper booking. Full-route step-free access is unverified.
Access & restrictions
Partial access includes entrance-area viewing, the drill shed and courtyard views into the fitter's room. Full workshop access is restricted to accompanied tours and scheduled forge experiences. Parking charges apply. Bridge replacement is now reported complete, but restoration of all public parking spaces remains unconfirmed; check before travelling.
Facilities
Refreshments, maps and gifts at the visitor centre; toilets including an accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities; benches and picnic tables. Indoor facilities depend on opening hours. Barbecues are prohibited.
Seasonal considerations
Published winter opening is weekends, 10am–3.30pm; February–March weekends are listed as 10.30am–4pm. Confirm holiday opening: the February half-term notice still refers to 2026, not 2027. Much of the site is outdoors with limited shelter.
