WHY GO
Explore historic parkland, woodland and a former ducal fishpond on Longshaw’s moorland estate.
Longshaw combines open parkland and woodland with traces of an older working landscape. Once the Duke of Rutland’s shooting estate, it was donated to the National Trust in 1931. From the visitor hub, a path follows the meadow and ha-ha before descending towards the fishpond. This guide focuses on that central estate landscape, rather than neighbouring Padley Gorge. Longshaw Lodge itself is a private residence, not a visitor attraction.

Before you set out
Details and coordinates can be incomplete or out of date. Check current access, conditions, weather and your route with the site operator before travelling. This is not live navigation or emergency guidance.

Approach
Follow brown signs from the A6187 to Woodcroft, rather than navigation to the private lodge entrance. Walk towards the café and visitor hub, approximately 250 metres away. For the optional fishpond extension, follow the meadow path from the visitor centre, pass the gate and bear right beside the rhododendrons and ha-ha.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
5 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
The car park mixes chipped tarmac and bound gritstone. The café approach is gently sloping and can be uneven after rain. The fishpond path becomes rougher as it descends.
Accessibility
Extra-wide disabled/young-family parking bays are available at Woodcroft. Accessible toilets are provided at the café and courtyard. Ask the Welcome Team about suitable routes: some estate gradients exceed 1:12, and wheelchair suitability should not be assumed from the Miles Without Stiles designation.
Access & restrictions
Public estate access is listed from dawn to dusk. Parking is charged, with free parking for National Trust members subject to registration. Spaces are limited; use designated bays only. Keep dogs on a short lead. Longshaw Lodge has no public access.
Facilities
Café, toilets, accessible toilets, baby-changing facilities, second-hand bookshop and a Welcome building. There are no adult changing facilities. Check facility opening hours separately from estate access.
Seasonal considerations
Heavy rainfall can make paths more challenging for wheelchairs and buggies. Plan winter walks within dawn-to-dusk access and check café/toilet hours before travelling. Midweek visits are recommended by the operator for quieter conditions. Barbecues and fires are prohibited.

Approach walk: approximately 5 minutes one way from the stated arrival point.
Total visit time: not verified
Step-free approach: not checked.
No supplied discovery area is a close fit. The five-minute approach is the operator’s approximate one-way walk from Woodcroft car park to the café/visitor hub, not to the fishpond and not a total visit duration. No verified pond approach time or complete step-free assurance is supplied.
