Mam Tor Summit and Hillfort

The Peak District, Derbyshire

WHY GO

A stepped ascent to broad Peak District views and the earthworks of a prehistoric hillfort above Castleton.

Mam Tor’s 517-metre ridge combines far-reaching views with prehistoric earthworks. Look north across Edale towards Kinder Scout and the Derwent Moors. Banks, ditches and house platforms survive from a settlement whose origins may extend into the late Bronze Age. This guide covers the direct ascent from Mam Nick car park, not the longer circular trail. The summit approach is stepped and stone-pitched. Keep to established paths to limit erosion of the landscape and archaeological remains.

Approach
From Castleton, drive west through Winnats Pass, turn right at the T-junction and pass the first right turn; the car park is next on the right. On foot, climb the steps at the top of the car park, follow the roadside path to the small gate and National Trust sign, then pass through bearing left. Follow the stone steps and stone-pitched path to the summit.
Walking time from arrival (one way)

Terrain & steps
Steep uphill sections with stone steps and a stone-pitched summit path. Steep paths can be slippery after wet weather.
Accessibility
The direct approach includes steps and is not step-free. Wheelchair suitability is not established. Do not interpret the stone surface as an accessible-route designation.
Access & restrictions
Use designated parking, not roads or grass verges. Keep dogs on leads throughout. Stay on paths; barbecues and campfires are prohibited.
Facilities
Small National Trust car park. Members park free with registration; non-members pay using JustPark, with instructions at the machine. The estate lists no toilet facilities. No route bins: take litter and dog waste home.
Seasonal considerations
Peak-period parking can fill by 9am, particularly on busy weekends; return at a quieter time if full. Wet weather can make steep paths slippery. Check current operator notices and opening information before travelling.
