WHY GO

A steep wooded hill above Old Glossop, reached from the old mill streets and paths beside Shelf Brook.

Shire Hill is a National Park Authority wood on Glossop’s eastern edge. Its wooded slopes sit between the town and the open Dark Peak. A local walk can combine the wood with the Shelf Brook approach without committing to a mountain day on Bleaklow.

Plan a safe visit
Editorial review: 6 November 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
Allow 20 minutes one way (estimated) from the end of Shepley Street via the Shelf Brook / Doctor’s Gate approach and the signed woodland paths into Shire Hill. Use the local route map to choose a short woodland walk; do not continue onto Bleaklow by mistake.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
20 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Uneven hillside paths with sustained inclines; nearby local walking routes include gates, steps and muddy sections.
Accessibility
The wood is described as steep. A complete audit of the stated approach has not been verified; no wheelchair-suitability or step-free promise is made.
Access & restrictions
Old Glossop Residents Association permits considerate parking at the stream side of the end of Shepley Street. Keep the turning circle and access for large vehicles clear; follow current parking signs.
Seasonal considerations
Expect slippery roots and mud after rain, with less shelter and a longer commitment if extending beyond the wood towards open moorland.

One-way approach: 20 minutes (estimated) into the wood from Shepley Street. Total visit: 90–150 minutes (estimated) for a local woodland walk and return, with stops. The older Trail 44 gives 4 km and 1–2 hours for a route around Shire Hill; the range adds time for exploring the wood. This is not the longer Swineshaw Reservoir route.
