WHY GO

Longdendale water views and dam scenery with an approach from Hadfield Station along the former Woodhead railway trail.

Bottoms Reservoir occupies the western end of the Longdendale reservoir chain between Hadfield and Tintwistle. The approach from Hadfield links the Longdendale Trail with lower waterside paths, making a station-based outing with a different character from the higher moorland reservoirs.

Plan a safe visit
Editorial review: 6 November 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
Allow 25 minutes one way (estimated) from Hadfield Station via Platt Street and the ramp onto the Longdendale Trail, then the signed lower-path connection to the reservoir described in the CAMRA route. The visit range covers a shorter waterside out-and-back, not the full four-mile pub circuit.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
25 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
A surfaced former railway path followed by descending tracks, a short tunnel, kissing gates and lower waterside paths; the longer circular routes also include steps and stiles.
Accessibility
The Longdendale Trail alone is not an access assessment for the reservoir approach. Kissing gates, the descent and current path condition need checking; full approach step-free status is unverified.
Access & restrictions
Use signed public footpaths and gates and keep operational reservoir structures clear. For a shorter visit, retrace the approach instead of joining the longer route across the busy main road into Tintwistle.
Seasonal considerations
Lower paths can be muddy or slippery. Check current rail times separately and leave enough daylight for the return through the trail connections.
