WHY GO

Wooded stream valleys beside the Snake Pass, with footbridges and a short circuit; check recent path damage and take care crossing the A57.

Snake Woodlands brings trees, mossy banks and running water into the open Dark Peak landscape. Lady Clough runs through the woodland towards the River Ashop, with footbridges linking short paths. It is a sheltered-feeling contrast to the surrounding high moors, although the steep entry and road crossing still need care.

Plan a safe visit
Editorial review: 6 November 2026. Conditions may change.
Approach
Allow 15 minutes one way (estimated) from Birchen Clough car park to the lower Lady Clough footbridge near the River Ashop. Carefully cross the A57, descend the stepped zigzag path and use the woodland paths. A published 2.3 km circuit provides the visit-time baseline; follow current closures if paths are damaged.
Walking time from arrival (one way)
15 minutes (approximate)
Terrain & steps
Steep stepped entry, rocky and uneven woodland paths, a kissing gate and footbridges. The circuit crosses the fast A57 twice.
Accessibility
The stepped approach is not step free. The current walking guide also describes the circuit as unsuitable for prams; no accessible alternative is verified.
Access & restrictions
An August 2026 route account reports logging damage to footpaths. This is not confirmation that the route has been repaired. Use only safe open paths, obey forestry signs and turn back if necessary; take litter home.
Seasonal considerations
Mud, slippery rocks, high water and forestry operations can alter the walk. Do not improvise a steep scramble to bypass damaged paths, and allow time to cross the A57 safely.
